About Us
In 2019 I wanted to buy a new purse. A seemingly insignificant decision, but I had no idea how it would change my life.
I couldn't find a bag that I liked and ended up spending way more time than I wanted searching the internet for a purse I would like. I wasn't at all looking to start a business, but I remember this moment so clearly. My husband and his business partner were headed out of town to pick up some supplies and asked if I wanted to tag along. I said yes, and was thinking since the two of them would be talking upfront and I would be sitting in the backseat that it would be the perfect time for me to finally just pick a dang bag and order it. I was honestly fed up with looking now and had lowered my standards, I was thinking even if it's not perfect if I just find one that will work I'm going to go ahead and order it because I am so tired of looking.
About halfway to our destination is when it happened. I landed on a handmade bag etsy page. Now, it wasn't the bags that did it, I honestly didn't like the bags that I saw on this page. It was that word "handmade." I never can describe what happened in my mind during that moment. It wasn't a "Oh, I guess I could always just make a bag for myself." In that moment I instantly saw everything that I'm living out now, four years later. I instantly saw this entire business I could never even have comprehended before that instant, I saw exactly how I wanted to market the business, the pictures I wanted to take, the bags I wanted to create, it was like I could see the whole thing. It was something I had never experienced before.
I spent the next couple of weeks trying to talk myself out of it. I just couldn't stop thinking about it, so I decided to casually mention the idea to my mom and husband, thinking they would tell me it was a terrible idea and then I could finally move on. To my surprise they both really thought I should do it. I never thought that's what was going to come out of their mouth's!
After lots of prayer I finally decided to go for it. I was beyond excited, but never thought it would be so difficult to figure out. I spent over a year trying to make even the smallest bit of progress toward starting this new business but got virtually nowhere for an entire year. But, I think I can say without exaggeration not a single day went by that entire year that I didn't think about wanting to start a handmade purse business. My always supportive husband never let the words cross his lips but I definitely was getting the "I'll believe it when I see it." feeling whenever I brought it up, so I stopped talking about it but always kept dreaming about it.
Ironically, almost a year to the date of this dream entering my mind and right after my first child was born, (Consequently leaving me with less time, energy and money than ever before.) everything just started falling into place. I can only explain it as God's timing because all of the roadblocks and closed doors that had been stopping me for a year started falling away at once and I was finally able to move forward.
Two months later in November of 2020, I was buzzing with excitement as I posted the first ever bag I created on my personal Facebook page. It sold within minutes and I got such a great response. I felt like I had finally done it. I don't know if I've ever been more excited to make a sale. To me, it was the start of my dream.
Looking back I really was always searching before I started this business. I was constantly wondering "what else" could I do. I've never felt that once since this became my "job." I'm grateful every day and am in complete awe that this is what I get to do everyday.
Purses
Purses are where this whole thing got started, and for that they'll always have a special place in my heart. I dreamed of starting a handmade western handbag business for over a year before I was able to learn the skill. I think purses are the most impactful accessory on your overall style, yet always overlooked. Most people wear the same purse everyday so it's affecting every single outfit you wear! For that reason you should be crazy about your bag and make sure it's 100% your style. If you want a high-end western style, start with your bag!
Jewelry
After starting my western handbag company I soon found myself deep in the world of western fashion. It didn't take long at all to become completely and totally obsessed with turquoise and sterling silver jewelry. Learning to make leather bags and create artwork through hats gave me the confidence to know I could learn to create more difficult pieces. In the beginning of 2024 I decided to take the leap and learn to become a silversmith. I absolutely love it and am so glad that I did. No high-end western look is complete without turquoise jewelry.
Hats
It's hard to think of western fashion without thinking of a good quality hat. Several years ago I was really inspired any time I would see a beautiful artistic hat. After creating my bags daily with a long multi-process system, the idea of decorating hats seemed so artistic, simple and peaceful. I decided I wanted to start offering hats and have loved it! It has been a more laid back form of art where I take a hat that is already made and burn designs into it, paint it, add decorative stitching and/or add add a host of other embellishments. As my business has grown and evolved I've really leaned into the handmade aspect of my accessories. I have found myself wanting a more "handmade" hat. Rather than adding artwork to an already made hat, I have started the process of becoming a millinery artist. I am currently learning the entire process of making hats starting with just a piece of felt. In September I have the privilege and amazing opportunity to train under "The Hat Maker for the Movies". The creator behind the hats in the movies: Tombstone, Conagher, Rough Riders, Gunfighter's Moon and more. His client's include: Sam Elliot, Ronald Reagan, Kurt Russell and more. I can't wait to soak in all the knowledge and am excited to see what this brings for the future of Wyncie & Co. Hats!
